O. velutina is a forest dwelling species and records are few except where there has been extensive research using long-erm pit-trapping and malaise-trapping techniques. Other records are from chance encounters of a specimen resting under logs or stones in a forest. It must be a widespread species from at least Wellington to the Coromandel with a uncertain record from Auckland. see also O. halli and O. magna .
