Known from several localities in Canterbury, especially in relatively undisturbed swamplands and seepages. Also present in Nelson and the North Island on Mt Ruapehu. Its distribution in very separated sites is not understood, especially in Canterbury where many samples of tipulids have been taken. This may fit with its suspected inability to fly due to slightly narrower wings than other species and perhaps sensitivity to human modified habitats.
