The large mountain scree weta is common thoughout all the eastern mountains of Marlborough, Canterbury and North Otago. It extends further westwards into the Main Divide and adjacent mountains but only at relatively small populations. Rainfall is probably a limiting factor at its western limits. In Canterbury it lies close to the eastern limits of Deinacrida fluvialis, a weta that is found in a feldfield habitat rather than a scree habitat.
