Although this species has been in New Zealand probably for some time it has lain unrecognised. It is apparently common on Kermadec Island and is established in Mairangi Bay and Blockhouse Bay, Auckland.. However, this species, Periplaneta brunnea and Periplaneta japonica are very similar. All three are known to be household pests in tropical and warm temperate climates and Periplaneta japonica could well become a pest in the cooler parts of New Zealand.
