This species and M. capito are very close and can not be separated on simple external features. They were once considered to be the same. M. bucolicus is confined to a few islands in the Marlborough Sounds and M. capito was once widespread but now only with localised populations in the North Island as the lowland forest has been cleared by fire, agriculture and urban development.
