Probably the dominant species in the mossy margins of fast flowing water, especially waterfalls, and associated filamentous mats within water flowing over rocks. The larvae form tunnels within the matrix, lining them with a gelatinous material. Near pupation the larva forms a gelatinous blob and pupates within. Other larvae, of various sizes may enter the blob and feed from there.
