Widespread from Mt Maungatua, near Dunedin, through the Catlins to Bluff and Queenstown and all through Fiordland from Jacksons Bay south to Solander Island. It is yet to be found on Stewart Island and it is probably absent. Although tolerant of a wide variety of conditions from seashore driftwood to the dense forests and stonefields of Fiordland, it is yet to be found in urban habitats.
